Week 1

Advanced Typography : Typographic System

Eight Major Typographic System:
  • Axial
  • Radial
  • Dilatational
  • Random
  • Grid
  • Modular
  • Transitional
  • Bilateral
-Axial System: The elements are placed to the left or right (single side) The information is placed based on the single line

Fig 1.0 Axial System Example

-Radial System: All the elements/ information are extended from a point of focus. All the information will spread out from the point. There can be multiple points in one page.

-Dilatational System: The elements expand from a central point (look like a circle). Can place the information into different rings.

-Random System: The elements are randomly appear without any specific pattern or relationship

-Grid System: Common typographic system. The elements are placed in vertical and horizontal divisions. Especially use in books. Use different font sizes and types to create the hierarchy

-Transitional System: All informal systems of layered banding. Segregating information within certain bands.

-Modular System: This is a series of non-objective elements that are constructed in a standardised units. Allow to move the individual units to where you prefer. every unit in same size.

-Bilateral System: The elements are placed in a symmetrical way.

Week 2

Advanced Typography : Typographic Composition

Principles of Design composition

8 typographic system

-Environmental Grid:
  • Based on the exploration of an existing structure
  • Organizer the information in super-structure
  • include non-objective elements to create a unique visual

-Form and Movement Grid:
  • Based on the exploration of an existing Grid systems

Week 3

Advanced Typography : Context & Creativity

- Handwriting :
  • First mechanically produced letterforms
  • Basic or standard for form
  • Shape and line are influence from others tools and materials
  • Oldest writing systems present in Southeast Asia was Indian Scripts
Fig 1.5 Evolution of Latin Alphabet

- Cuneiform :
  • Earliest system of actual writing
  • Used in a number of languages
- Hieroglyphics
  • Egyptian writing system
  • Craving
  • System mix within rebus and phonetic characters
Fig 1.6 Ancient Egypt Chart
- Early Greek
  • Built on the Egyptian logo consonantal system
  • 22 letters
  • Words in row but the direction not fix
  • The stroke grown ticker
Fig 1.7 Early Greek
- Carolingian Minuscule
  • Enstablished by court school
  • Use for all legal and literary works
  • Important a development as the standard roman capital
- Movable Type
  • Printing (wood block) had been practiced in China, Korea ,Japan
  • Introduction of moveable type was introduces in the 1000-1100 CE
  • Koreans establish a foundry to cast movable type
- The Brahmi Script
  • Earliest writing system developed in India
  • One of the most influential writing system

TASK 1 Exercise 1

In this exercise, we are asked to create 8 typographic posters by using the different typographic system. Simple elements are allowed using in this task. All the designs must done in Adobe InDesign.

Progress

Fig 3.1 Axial system

For the first design (Left), I used the most common Axial system, but I tried to play with different font types to make the poster nicer. Red colors are use to make the information look more pop-up.

Second design (Right), I think the straight line in the axial system is too common, so I decided to use a diagonal line in this system. I want the title to look more attractive, so red frames are used to highlight the title to attract the audience's view.

Fig 3.2 Radial system

For the Radial system ,I try to used one and two point as the main focus and spread out the text information. I try to create a dynamic typo in the second pic (Right) by using some lines. It's to strengthen the sense of spread out.

Fig 3.3 Dilatational system

I'm quite struggle at the dilatational system. It's hard to create a strong hierarchy typo .For the second design (right).I use the infinity logo as reference and place the text on it. By using the bold text on the important information to ensure the readability of the text.

Fig 3.4 Random system

In the random system, I used some graphic elements and different font to create a random vibe. These outcome are actually inspired by the collage art so I overlapping the text and graphic elements.

For the second design I use the text " ALL RIPPED" as the main focus. The red frame highlight the text and it lets the typography looks more attractive. Different type font are using in this system and it's help to emphasize the random vibe.

Fig 3.5 Modular System

For Modular System, I was inspired by the calendar layout so I put some lines and increase some text to bring out the vibes. Different font size emphasize the hierarchy of the layout.

Fig 3.6 Grid system

3 x 3 boxes are used in the both layout.
Fig 3.7 Transitional system

For the transitional system, I used different sizes of strokes and put the text on it to create the bands. Depth and overlap the text let the layout looks light and airy. The lines leads the viewer attention look read the information.

Task 1 Exercise 2 - Type & Play

In this exercise, we had instructed to find and select an image and use the structure and texture that can find in the picture as a potential to find words.

Selected Picture
Fig 4.0 Reference Picture (Selected)

Fig 4.1 First Letterform extraction and Outcome

In the first attempt I extract the word from the crack in the stone directly and use Century as my reference font. But after showing the outcome to Mr.Vinod I was pointed out that I should not use the crack of the stone as my extraction it lets the final outcome loose the structure of the stone. It seems like a crack that can appear on any broken things.

After the class I know that I should extract the letter from the surface that include the structure of the rock surface. So I come up with the follow extraction.

Fig 4.2 Second Extraction

Letter font that extract from the image : A, O, J, B, F

Refinement Process

Fig 4.3 Reference Font

I use century schoolbook bold as my reference font.

First result of the refinement
Fig 4.4 Before and After first refinement

In the first attempt I reduced the stroke width base on my refence font but I keep the structure of a stone surface by keeping the concave and convex edges of the text. After this Mr Vinod advice me to create and add some key details inside the font ( The crack of the rock and texture). So it will be more look like the reference.

Poster Showcase

In this stage we need to create a poster by using the letterforms with relevant picture. I try to create a movie poster and played with the color tone of the picture.

Fig 4.10 Poster Design

After showing to Mr. Vinod, he said the title looks dark. Adjust the opacity to let the title more pop up. Besides that, the font bellow seems not so suitable. He suggest to change it into San Serif font.

FEEDBACK

Week 2

Specific Feedback:
(Grid) need to check the box sizes.

Week 3

General feedback:
Font need to extract from the whole surface not from the stroke. This will lose the structure of the reference.

Specific Feedback:
Redo and extract the letter again. Need to keep the structure of the rock more.

Week 4

Specific Feedback:
Overall looks good. But the title looks dark in the picture.
Adjust the opacity to make it lighter.
The font bellow not so suitable try to change it to Sanserif font.

REFLECTION

Experience
Recap the knowledge that we learn last semester. Exercise 1 was the part that I most struggle for. It is hard to create a creativity layout with a plain text. I use a lot of time to explore the layout and looks for reference but the some outcome not as good as expected let me feel a bit lost especially the radial system. However I'm still enjoying the whole progress. Design a new letter font from a subject is new and fun for me. Even I get it wrong and need to redo at the first I still learned a lot from it.

Observations
In the exercise 1, I learned to observe the gap between the words and information brings out different vibe. Some layout will come out with a weird looking if the gap or font are not using well. Extract letter fonts from an organic object is fun and also train our observations about things.

Findings
Typography is fun as we need to jump out of our comfort zone. Different layouts system brings out different vibe.

Fig 5.1 Example Rules and Hierarchy of Radial System

After reading this page, I realize that we need to careful use anything that appear in the image. Some of the color or elements will let the viewer feel confused.

Fig 5.2 Example Transparent Radial Planes

I learn that not only lines can show the movement while doing the radial system. While repeat the movement by using different transparency of the boxes will have a even more stronger of the movement than lines.
